A Call to Stewardship, Generosity, and Service

Recognizing the integral role of boards in the nonprofit sector, the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust established the Board Leadership Initiative in 2014.  The initiative’s purpose is to strengthen and equip CEOs, senior staff and board members of nonprofit organizations to significantly “raise the bar” in their board leadership roles and responsibilities as they steward the organization’s mission, resources, outcomes and results. We do this through the following means:

A healthy, robust, and vibrant nonprofit sector is integral to the health of neighborhoods, communities, and cities. A number of factors contribute to the flourishing of an organization, yet few—if any—are more important than an effective board of directors. Research reveals that an effective, well-trained and highly engaged board has a direct impact on the overall success of a nonprofit organization.  However, recent surveys and Trust experience suggest boards are often not operating at full capacity.
